Beer Tasting Dinner with Ray Daniels 5:00 pm

 Squared Pizza + Beer, 1123 Walnut St, Boulder
Enjoy an intimate beer-tasting dinner with the expert who founded the Cicerone® Certification Certification Program, Ray Daniels. Ray is also an author with 30 years of beer and brewing credits, including the industry standard, Designing Great Beers. The dinner includes a ticket to the screening of Brewmaster, which follows the beer tasting dinner.

Downtown Boulder Bites and Brews Tour 5:30 pm

Join the founder of Local Table Tours, Megan Bucholz, on a beer tasting tour in Downtown Boulder. Brewer’s choice beer tasters will be paired with chef’s choice bites on our 90-minute walking tasting tour visiting The Post, West Flanders Brewing Company, and Squared Pizza + Beer, Boulder Beer’s Detroit pizza restaurant and experimental and development brewery. The brewery tour will be followed by a screening of the film Brewmaster, at the Canyon Theater at the Boulder Public Library, which is covered in the tour ticket price.

Brewmaster 7:30 pm

Brewmaster is a documentary that encapsulates the recent history of craft beer by following a NYC lawyer and home brewer who wants to own a brewery and a beer educator studying to become a Master Cicerone. Set in the craft beer community, the film features successful brewers Sam Calagione, John and Jen Kimmich, Jim Koch, Garrett Oliver and Rob Tod as well as beer luminaries Charlie Papazian and Ray Daniels.

After the panel discussion for Brewmaster, catch a beer with us and continue the craft brew conversation. Nothing builds up a thirst more than hearing other people talk about beer, both on- and off-camera. Come out and celebrate the festival’s opening night with a pint!

Soufra is the inspirational story of Mariam Shaar, a Lebanese refugee-camp resident and an entrepreneur who aims to change her fate by launching a catering company and expanding it into a food-truck business with a diverse team of fellow refugee women. With unrelenting faith in Mariam and in each other, they not only heal the wounds of war through the unifying power of food but also take their future into their own hands.

Engage: Conversations with Food Nonprofits 2:30 pm

This new festival event, Engage: Conversations with Food Nonprofits, features five food-oriented nonprofits (Conscious Alliance, Cooking Matters, Metro Caring, Noble Grain Alliance, Sister Carmen Community Center) who will talk about their organizations and missions, including a panel discussion, audience participation, representative food, and short films about their organizations.

Featuring a street food reception, a screening of Babette’s Feast (one of Bourdain’s favorite food films), and interviews with Laurie Woolever (Anthony Bourdain’s close colleague and official biographer) and No Reservations and Parts Unknown cinematographer Todd Liebler by Sara Brito, our Homage to Anthony Bourdain is not to be missed.

Join the panelists for the Eating Animals screening at River and Woods for a brunch discussion on issues related to the film like raising livestock and the benefit of combining organic farming with raising animals. How We Grow depicts young farmers on the Western Slope overcoming obstacles to grow food for their community with the help of established farmers and their community. It highlights the importance of supporting young farmers to ensure our healthy food future.

Eating Animals 3:30 pm

The Unknown Connection between Pollinators and Meat Production: Talk and Q& A with Tim Brod of Highland Honeybees (precedes film)

Based on the book by Jonathan Safran Foer and narrated and produced by Natalie Portman, Eating Animals tells the story of the beginning of the end of factory farming. The film explores the notion of stepping away from the practices of the past 40 years that have polluted our environment, endangered our health, and caused us all to be complicit in the inhumane treatment of animals.

Thomas, a young German baker, is having an affair with Oren, a married Israeli businessman who makes frequent business trips to Berlin. When Oren dies in a car crash in Israel, Thomas travels to Jerusalem seeking answers regarding his death. Using a fabricated identity, Thomas enters the life of Anat, his lover’s newly widowed wife, who owns a small café in downtown Jerusalem. Thomas starts to work for her and creates German cakes and cookies that enliven and enrich her café.
