Juana, a working-class Latina single mother, is the main character in this dramedy. Juana lands a position as a kitchen assistant at a local Japanese restaurant, where she discovers an entirely new world of cuisine and culture and makes a friend.
While working in the restaurant, Juana secretly observes the sushi chefs and eventually teaches herself to make sushi. Her dream of becoming a sushi chef nearly becomes derailed by gender and cultural discrimination but her determination propels her to keep trying to fulfill her dreams.
