Films 2017

The 2017 Flatirons Food Film Festival screened nine film programs that consisted of eight feature-length films, two short film series, and more short films. Following is a listing of our films.

James Beard: America’s First Foodie | 6:30 pm

6:30-7:30pm: Celebrate with us on our opening night! This event will be held indoors because of weather.
7:30-9:15pm: Film program

James Beard: America’s First Foodie is a documentary that chronicles a century of food through the story of James Beard, the iconic cookbook author, journalist, television celebrity and teacher. Beard’s pioneering work included championing local food and sustainability, starting New York City’s meals on wheels, and bringing national awareness to what good food can be and its importance in our lives.

Look and See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry (with panel discussion) | 7:30 pm
Look and See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry is a cinematic portrait of the changing landscapes and shifting values of rural America in the era of industrial agriculture, as seen through the mind’s eye of the renowned writer, farmer, and activist, Wendell Berry.

A Journey through the People’s Republic of Fermentation | 7:30 PM
A Journey through the People’s Republic of Fermentation is a series of short films that follow renown fermented food author Sandor Katz and Mara King, co-founder of Ozuke in Southwest China. On their travel, they eat lots of amazing things, cook with locals, and learn as much as they can about the fermentation traditions of the region.

Ratatouille | 10:30 am
Pixar animated classic about a Parisian rat who wants to become a chef. Part of the 5th-anniversary classic food film series. An animated comedy about a rat that wants to be a chef, and allies himself with a kitchen worker at a famous Parisian restaurant. Part of the 5th-anniversary classic food film series. Preceded by a children’s market walk and cooking demo at the Boulder Farmers Market by Chef Matt Collier of Seeds Library Cafe.

What’s For Dinner Mom? | 1:00 pm
In this Japanese drama, two sisters return to their old family home which is set to be torn down. There, Tae Hitoto discovers a box containing recipes and letters written by her mother, who was a passionate cook and died 20 years ago. Her mother moved to Taiwan, married a Taiwanese man, and learned how to cook Taiwanese food. After her husband’s death, she endured a battle with cancer. Tae Hitoto decides to travel to Taiwan to trace her mother’s past and reminisce about the Taiwanese food that she made.

Sour Grapes | 4:00 pm
With pockets full of cash, charisma and a preternatural memory for vintages, an unassuming young Rudy Kurniawan earned the reputation of a wine savant, surrounding himself with some of high society’s most fervent wine connoisseurs. Little did they know that he was pulling one of the most ingenious wine cons of our time.

Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent | 7:15 pm
Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent explores the remarkable life of Jeremiah Tower, one of the most controversial and influential figures in the history of American gastronomy. Preceded by a sparkling wine reception for Chef Tower that is open to Sour Grapes and Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent ticket holders. There will be an after party with Jeremiah Tower at License No. 1 in the Hotel Bouderado after the film.

Big Night | 1:30 pm
This film is a drama about two Italian brothers who run a failing authentic Italian restaurant in 1950’s New Jersey and bank on saving their restaurant during one big night. Preceded by  “Big Night by Day: Via Perla Luncheon,” a lunch homage to the cuisine depicted in the film from 11:30-1pm with Antonio Laudisio.

Eat Drink Man Woman | 4:00 pm
This film is a Taiwanese comedy about a widowed master chef who lives with his three unmarried adult daughters in Taipei. One of director Ang Lee’s first films, it’s a vital part of any cinematic collection.
